Batang ai ukom iban longhouse

TOUR CODE: KP 08

DURATION: 2 Days / 1 Night

DEPARTURE: 8.30am

In the jungle of Sarawak, far from the hustle and bustle of city life, along riverbanks, perched on hills or by the side of the jungle paths, can be found one of humanity's most convivial and endearing type of habitat: the longhouse

Basically a village under one roof, the longhouse is a collection of individual family apartment built side by side and sharing a common verandah, with some longhouses harbouring up to a hundred families.

Although the origin are lost in time, the longhouse has been a feature in Sarawak as far as anybody can remember, and has always been a favourite type of dwelling for most indigenous communities, each having its own style of building and decorating the longhouse. The longhouse provide a feeling of togetherness and security, and played an important role in the social and religious traditions of the indigenous people.

Although many of the longhouses in Sarawak have gone modern, quite a number are still traditionally built and well preserved, some even having kept the head trophies collected by ancestors in the long gone days of head hunting.

Longhouse dwellers are a proud lot, hospitality is a golden rule and they want their guests not only to appreciate and understand their culture and tradition, past and present, but to have a good time too. Although in a more frequently visited longhouse people might put on traditional dresses for the evening's cultural performance, it will all be in a good humor with both guests and hosts enjoying the welcomed distraction.

The experience of sharing an evening of fun and friendship, chatting and joking around a bottle of heady Tuak (rice wine) with the charming longhouse dwellers, deep in the jungle of Borneo, is certainly one of the strong moments in any "Sarawak Vacation". Many a visitor has felt strong personal emotion during a longhouse stay, and for most, their visit was an eye opener and an experience that will be hardly be forgotten.
